The Ritual of Samhain

Samhain wasn't just a single-day event; it encompassed a weeklong observance that spanned from October 29th to November 4th in our modern Gregorian calendar. During this workshop we will honour this age-old timespan and the distinct rituals:

Day 1: A day dedicated to honouring heroes.

Day 2: Remembering the deceased.

Day 3: The pivotal moment - the Fire Recognition Ceremony. Here, druids extinguished the fires in individual homes, and communities congregated on the village's central square. Druids then kindled a sacred fire, which would serve as the source of new fires to protect against malevolent spirits. The inhabitants used this sacred flame to warm their homes and safeguard their households for the upcoming year.

Day 4: The climax of Samhain, where the boundaries between the living and the dead blurred. Those who had lost loved ones symbolically left their doors open and set a place at the table for their return.

Days 5, 6, and 7: A time for communal and familial gatherings, further reinforcing the bonds of kinship and community.These age-old Celtic traditions form the intricate tapestry that laid the groundwork for Samhain, a celebration that not only influenced modern Halloween but continues to resonate with those who seek to honour their ancestral roots and connect with the mystique of this ancient holiday.
